
OpenAI has entered into a landmark $38 billion deal with Amazon Web Services (AWS), signaling a dramatic shift in the company’s cloud strategy and breaking away from its near-total dependence on Microsoft.
The agreement gives OpenAI access to massive computing resources powered by Nvidia’s latest GPUs and marks the beginning of a broader, multi-provider infrastructure model designed to support the company’s rapidly growing artificial intelligence workloads.
The arrangement will see OpenAI immediately start using AWS data centers across the United States, with Amazon planning to construct additional capacity in the years ahead. The infrastructure will handle both training and inference for OpenAI’s foundation models, ensuring that systems such as ChatGPT and future AI products have sufficient compute power to operate at scale.
Amazon’s shares climbed roughly 5% after the deal was announced, reflecting optimism that the partnership could boost AWS’s dominance in the AI cloud sector.
Breaking From Microsoft’s Shadow
For years, Microsoft held an exclusive agreement to provide OpenAI’s cloud services through Azure. That deal formally expired last week, freeing the ChatGPT creator to negotiate with other major providers. Although OpenAI will continue working with Microsoft and plans to spend another $250 billion on Azure infrastructure, the new AWS contract highlights its intention to diversify its technological backbone and avoid over-reliance on a single partner.
Amazon’s cloud division remains the global leader in infrastructure, outpacing both Microsoft and Google. With this new alliance, OpenAI now gains direct access to AWS’s vast GPU capacity – an increasingly scarce resource as demand for artificial intelligence computing surges.
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, described the move as essential to advancing the company’s mission. “Building frontier AI demands scale and reliability,” he said. “By joining forces with AWS, we’re strengthening the global compute ecosystem that will drive the next era of AI innovation.”
Strategic Implications for Amazon and the Industry
The collaboration carries strategic weight for Amazon as well. AWS Vice President Dave Brown said that OpenAI will use dedicated, isolated capacity within Amazon’s network, calling it “completely separate infrastructure” reserved for the new workloads. The company has already begun integrating OpenAI’s models into its own managed AI platform, Bedrock, which hosts technologies from leading developers such as Anthropic, Cohere, and Stability AI.
Amazon has also been building a massive $11 billion data center in Indiana to support Anthropic—one of OpenAI’s biggest rivals and a company in which Amazon itself is a key investor. The OpenAI partnership therefore deepens Amazon’s dual strategy: serving both the competition and the broader AI ecosystem at once.
Preparing for the Next Stage
Industry observers view the AWS deal as part of OpenAI’s larger plan to mature operationally and prepare for an eventual public offering. By securing long-term capacity across several cloud providers—including Oracle, Google, Microsoft, and now Amazon—the company is reducing risks tied to single-vendor dependency while positioning itself as a scalable, independent AI powerhouse.
OpenAI’s CFO Sarah Friar has hinted that the firm’s recent corporate restructuring was designed to support this next step, describing an eventual IPO as “a natural progression” for a company now valued at over $500 billion.
The $38 billion contract with AWS underscores that ambition.
