Dogecoin After The Election Surge: What Went Wrong With The Thesis

Dogecoin’s (DOGE) sharp rally following the 2024 U.S. presidential election revived long-standing hopes that the token could finally reach the one-dollar mark.

But as enthusiasm faded, structural constraints around supply, liquidity and real-world usage quickly came into focus, undermining the sustainability of the move.

Election-Fueled Speculation Drove The Surge

Dogecoin gained momentum in the weeks after Donald Trump’s election victory in November 2024, posting a triple-digit percentage increase over the month and ending the year just below $0.50.

The rally reignited retail speculation around a potential move to $1, a target that has long served as a psychological milestone for the meme-based asset.

Speculative interest intensified further after Trump appointed Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, commonly abbreviated as “DOGE.”

The coincidence of the acronym, combined with Musk’s history of public commentary around Dogecoin, drew aggressive short-term buying.

However, that momentum proved fragile as market conditions shifted.

Supply Dynamics Capped The Rally

As Dogecoin approached its late-2024 highs, selling pressure increased.

A move to $1 would imply a market capitalization approaching $150 billion based on current circulating supply, placing Dogecoin among the largest digital assets globally.

Unlike Bitcoin (BTC), Dogecoin does not have a fixed supply cap.

Approximately five billion new tokens enter circulation each year, creating persistent inflation that raises the level of demand required simply to maintain price stability.

Profit-taking accelerated near the $0.48 region, turning that level into a zone of heavy resistance.

Subsequent recovery attempts in early 2025 failed to break through, and trading activity declined.

Daily volume, which had surged during the rally, fell sharply as participation waned.

On-chain data showed limited accumulation by large holders during the pullback, leaving the market largely driven by retail flows.

Limited Utility And Muted ETF Demand

Beyond price action, Dogecoin continues to face challenges around adoption.

Merchant acceptance remains limited, with usage concentrated in niche online services rather than broad-based payments.

Technical constraints, including relatively slow transaction finality compared with traditional payment networks, further limit its competitiveness as a payment rail.

The launch of regulated investment products in late 2025 also failed to generate meaningful demand.

While U.S.-listed Dogecoin ETFs and trusts marked a milestone for access, assets under management remained modest compared with Bitcoin and Ethereum products, and fund flows were inconsistent.
