Anonymous Investor Sends $181,000 in Bitcoin to Satoshi’s Genesis Address — Funds Lost Forever

An anonymous Bitcoin (BTC) holder transferred 2.565 BTC , which is worth approximately $181,000 , to the legendary Genesis address associated with Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, on February 7, according to blockchain data.

The address is historically significant as it received the 50 BTC block reward from the Genesis Block, mined by Nakamoto on January 3, 2009. Due to the original design of Bitcoin’s code, that 50 BTC reward is unspendable.

Why the Funds Are Considered Permanently Burned

The Genesis address is widely believed to be inaccessible. Many experts suggest the private keys were either lost or may never have existed in a retrievable form. As a result, any Bitcoin sent to this address cannot be moved , effectively making the transfer a permanent burn.

Following the recent transaction, the Genesis address now holds more than 57 BTC, combining the original block reward with subsequent transfers made over the years.

Unlike typical Bitcoin transfers, this transaction was not a mistake. Blockchain observers note that previous small amounts of BTC have been sent to the Genesis address as symbolic tributes. However, a six-figure transfer of this scale is extremely rare.

A Symbolic Tribute to Bitcoin’s Creator?

Within the crypto community, the move is widely interpreted as a gesture of respect toward Satoshi Nakamoto, whose identity remains unknown.

Bitcoin’s mysterious founder is estimated to have mined approximately 1.1 million BTC during the network’s early days. None of those coins have ever been moved, fueling ongoing speculation about Nakamoto’s identity and intentions.

Large symbolic transfers like this one reinforce the almost mythic status Nakamoto holds in the cryptocurrencies ecosystem.

The Message Embedded in the Genesis Block

The Genesis Block carries deep ideological significance. Embedded within it is a headline from The Times newspaper:

“Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.”

The message is widely interpreted as a critique of the traditional financial system and a declaration of Bitcoin’s decentralized vision.

Technically, the Genesis Block also forms the root of the entire Bitcoin blockchain. Every subsequent block traces back to it, making it the foundation of Bitcoin’s security model.

Impact on Bitcoin’s Supply

Because the transferred BTC is effectively unspendable, the move reduces Bitcoin’s already limited circulating supply. With Bitcoin capped at 21 million coins, such burns reinforce the asset’s scarcity narrative.

While the identity and motivation of the sender remain unknown, one thing is certain: the $181,000 worth of BTC sent to the Genesis address will never re-enter circulation.

The event adds yet another chapter to the enduring legend of Satoshi Nakamoto — and serves as a reminder of Bitcoin’s immutable origins.
