Eurogroup Demands Mythos Access As Anthropic AI Finds OS Zero-Days

Euro-area finance ministers met in Brussels on Monday to press Anthropic for access to its Mythos AI model, which finds zero-day flaws in every major operating system.

Brussels Meeting On Mythos

The meeting, confirmed by Bloomberg, brought together euro-area finance chiefs alongside banking supervisors. Ministers wanted a path to the system that Washington has so far refused to widen.

Anthropic unveiled Mythos on Apr. 7 under a restricted programme called Project Glasswing. No European government, regulator or bank has been granted access.

The White House has blocked the company's plan to expand the model to roughly 70 additional organisations, citing security and infrastructure concerns. The U.S. National Security Agency, however, uses the system through earlier arrangements, while the U.S. Treasury has separately requested access.

Spain's economy minister Carlos Cuerpo told reporters before the gathering that the bloc must determine how "we can defend ourselves." He pushed for a coordinated response under the AI Act.

Lagarde, Bundesbank Weigh In

The Bundesbank moved first. In late April, Germany's central bank publicly called on the EU to demand access, arguing European banks could not realistically test their own infrastructure without it.

Christine Lagarde, the European Central Bank president, described Anthropic as a responsible operator, but warned the model in the wrong hands "could be really bad."

Switzerland's regulator FINMA went further, cautioning that immediate broad access could itself create systemic risk if banks lacked the defensive infrastructure to absorb its outputs. ASIC in Australia and the IMF's Kristalina Georgieva have voiced parallel concerns.

A single evaluation pass, according to Anthropic, surfaced 271 Firefox vulnerabilities patched by Mozilla, plus a 27-year-old bug in OpenBSD.

Why Mythos Matters Now

The structural problem, supervisors argue, is that defenders without comparable access are now meaningfully behind any attacker who obtains the model.

A breach earlier this year underscored the point. Unauthorised users gained access through a private Discord channel shortly after the limited launch, and reportedly retained it.

JPMorgan Chase remains the only bank publicly named as a Glasswing partner. Goldman Sachs and Citigroup are evaluating the model internally, separate reporting indicates. No European lender appears on the list.

Anthropic announced Project Glasswing on Apr. 7 with launch partners that included AWS, Apple, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA and Palo Alto Networks. The company has privately told European officials access will arrive "soon," with no formal timeline attached.
