On December 11, 2025, Kwon admitted to two counts of fraud related to the failure of Terra and its UST stablecoin, which resulted in a $40 billion loss for investors. Judge Paul Engelmayer rejected a proposed five-year plea deal, describing the fraudulent scheme as 'epic' and emphasizing the significant harm caused to victims. In addition to his U.S. sentence, Kwon may face up to 40 more years in prison in South Korea for related charges.
