The city's Plan ₿ initiative, launched in partnership with Tether, aims to integrate cryptocurrency into daily life by providing merchants with free smart POS terminals and leveraging the Bitcoin Lightning Network for low-fee transactions. This approach allows payments to be instantly converted into Swiss francs, minimizing exposure to crypto volatility. The initiative has seen significant growth, with over 350 merchants participating and a record 4,000 attendees at the 2025 Plan ₿ Forum. Lugano's model focuses on practical use cases, such as paying municipal bills and earning cashback in LVGA tokens, a local stablecoin.
