Bitfinex Hack Accomplice Ilya Lichtenstein Released Early

Ilya Lichtenstein, involved in the 2016 Bitfinex Bitcoin theft, has been released early from prison. His early release is attributed to the First Step Act, signed by President Trump in 2018, which allows sentence reductions for prisoners participating in rehabilitation programs. Lichtenstein was sentenced to five years in November 2024 for laundering nearly 120,000 Bitcoins, valued at approximately $4.5 billion at the time of the crime. His wife, Heather Morgan, who assisted in the crime, was sentenced to 18 months and released in October 2025.
