Ethereum Name Service (ENS) has announced that its ENSv2 will be exclusively deployed on Ethereum Layer 1 (L1), ceasing the development of its independent Layer 2 (L2) solution, Namechain. The decision comes as Ethereum L1's scalability and registration costs have significantly improved, rendering the need for a separate L2 less compelling. The ENS team assures that halting Namechain development will not affect the progress of ENSv2 functionalities, with related contracts and applications like ENS App and ENS Explorer now in public alpha. The ENS team emphasized that remaining on Ethereum L1 allows them to leverage the blockchain's inherent security and decentralization. Additionally, the technical insights gained from Namechain will be used to enhance ENS's interoperability with various L2 solutions.
