OpenAI has updated its agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to explicitly prohibit the use of its AI systems for domestic surveillance of U.S. citizens. CEO Sam Altman announced the amendment, which aligns with laws such as the Fourth Amendment and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, ensuring AI is not used for tracking or monitoring U.S. nationals. This move underscores OpenAI's commitment to protecting civil liberties and clarifying its stance on the use of commercially obtained personal information. The amendment also confirms that OpenAI's services will not be utilized by defense intelligence agencies, including the NSA. Altman emphasized the importance of operating through democratic processes and acknowledged the ongoing development and security trade-offs of AI technology. He also expressed hope that similar terms would be extended to other AI companies like Anthropic.
