Coinbase, Microsoft, and Europol have successfully dismantled Tycoon 2FA, a major phishing platform responsible for bypassing multi-factor authentication and facilitating widespread cyberattacks. The coordinated effort led to the takedown of 330 domains integral to the platform's operations, which included phishing pages and control panels. Tycoon 2FA, active since August 2023, was a subscription-based service that enabled cybercriminals to intercept live authentication sessions, sending millions of phishing emails monthly. The platform's activities affected nearly 100,000 organizations globally, including schools and hospitals. Europol's European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) spearheaded the international operation, with enforcement actions carried out in several European countries. Coinbase emphasized the importance of sustained efforts in combating such cyber threats, highlighting ongoing partnerships with Microsoft, law enforcement, and industry peers to prevent the use of cryptocurrency in funding cybercrime.
