Meta is set to lay off nearly 200 employees in the San Francisco Bay Area as part of a strategic shift towards artificial intelligence. The layoffs, affecting 124 employees in Burlingame and 74 in Sunnyvale, are expected to take effect by late May. This move is part of a broader plan that could see more than 20% of Meta's workforce, approximately 15,000 employees, potentially impacted. The company is investing heavily in AI, including a $10 billion data center in El Paso, Texas. Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, highlighted the efficiency gains from AI tools, noting that projects once requiring large teams can now be managed by fewer individuals. While a Meta spokesperson described the reports as speculative, the potential layoffs would be the largest since the company's significant cuts in 2022 and 2023.
