Bitcoin developer Jimmy Song has called for a more conservative approach to Bitcoin node clients to preserve its monetary properties and enhance network decentralization. Song suggests reinstating the OP_RETURN data limit to 83 bytes to reduce node storage and bandwidth costs, ensuring that ordinary users can continue to run nodes affordably. This comes after Bitcoin Core 30 increased the limit to 100,000 bytes in 2025, sparking community debate and leading to a significant rise in the use of alternative client Bitcoin Knots, which now accounts for approximately 21.7% of the network's nodes.
