Ripple's CTO Emeritus, David Schwartz, has highlighted security oversights following the $292 million exploit of Kelp DAO's rsETH bridge. Schwartz noted that while many DeFi bridging systems are well-designed with strong security mechanisms, these features are often underutilized due to convenience and operational complexity concerns. He observed that bridge providers frequently recommend not using their most robust security features, which may have contributed to the Kelp DAO breach. The exploit, identified on April 19, involved the draining of approximately 116,500 rsETH through LayerZero-related contract calls. On-chain analysis traced the issue to a private key leak, which allowed the attacker to manipulate the bridge. Schwartz speculated that Kelp DAO might have opted for a minimal security setup, potentially bypassing key LayerZero security features, leading to the vulnerability.
