Linear CEO Karri Saarinen has emphasized the growing role of AI code agents in enhancing engineering efficiency, rather than replacing engineers. In a recent post, Saarinen detailed how agentic coding, where AI assists in planning, modifying, and debugging code, has become prevalent. Linear's data shows a significant increase in the adoption of code agents, with usage activity surging over fivefold in recent months. These agents are now resolving over 1,000 issues monthly. Saarinen clarified that while AI tools increase bandwidth by handling minor tasks, they do not replace the need for engineers' judgment and direction. Engineers typically manage a few local agents and delegate minor fixes to cloud agents. He noted that complex problems still require human expertise and strategic planning remains crucial, as AI's role is primarily to streamline smaller, time-consuming tasks.
