Memory Chip Prices Skyrocket 340% Amid AI Demand Surge

News Flash 2026-05-02 12:31

Memory chip prices have soared by up to 340% over the past six months, driven by a surge in demand from AI applications. DDR4 16GB spot prices have increased between 200% and 340%, prompting major manufacturers like Samsung and Micron to halt price quotations temporarily. A 256GB DDR5 server memory module now costs over RMB 40,000, equivalent to a flagship smartphone's price. The demand for AI servers, which require significantly more memory than standard servers, has led to a reallocation of production capacity, with AI servers consuming 66% of global DRAM production. This shift has resulted in a structural shortage of DDR4 memory, as manufacturers focus on high-margin AI memory products like HBM and DDR5. As a result, consumer electronics prices are expected to rise, with companies like Apple hinting at increased costs impacting their products post-June 2026.
