Bitcoin Core Vulnerability CVE-2024-52911 Puts 43% of Nodes at Risk

News Flash 2026-05-06 10:16

Bitcoin Core developers have disclosed a high-severity vulnerability, CVE-2024-52911, affecting versions 0.14.1 through 28.4. This flaw allows miners to remotely crash nodes and execute code by mining specially crafted blocks. Discovered by developer Cory Fields in November 2024, the vulnerability was patched in December and released in April 2025 with version v29. Despite the fix, approximately 43% of nodes remain vulnerable as they continue to run outdated software. The attack, however, is unlikely to be exploited due to its high cost. Miners would need to expend significant hashing power to mine invalid blocks without receiving block rewards, making the practical execution of such an attack improbable. The last vulnerable version reached end-of-life on April 19, 2026, emphasizing the need for node operators to upgrade to secure their systems.
