OpenAI has encountered a significant hurdle in securing approximately $18 billion in financing for its custom-chip partnership with Broadcom, according to a report by The Information. This financing gap highlights the growing challenges in funding AI infrastructure projects, as the demand for capital outpaces availability. The shortfall affects an initial tranche of a multi-year rollout of OpenAI-designed chips, intended to reduce reliance on Nvidia hardware. The original agreement with Broadcom, announced in October 2025, outlined a $500 billion hardware expansion plan, including chips, networking, and data center capacity. Despite OpenAI's rapid revenue growth, the company is projected to spend around $115 billion by 2029, raising concerns among investors. As lenders grow cautious, OpenAI may need to restructure the financing, replace lenders, or scale back its chip rollout to meet its 2026 AI capital expenditure goals.
