Entain's General Counsel, Simon Zinger, has intensified efforts to persuade six Premier League clubs to abandon unlicensed gambling sponsors by the 2026/27 season. In letters to clubs including Burnley, Bournemouth, and Everton, Zinger highlighted concerns over sponsors like Stake and BJ88, citing their reliance on cryptocurrency and unregulated payment methods. This move follows Entain's previous communications with the Premier League and regulatory bodies, emphasizing the risks of money laundering and inadequate player protection associated with these sponsors. The pressure from Entain comes amid broader regulatory scrutiny in the UK. The UK Gambling Commission recently advertised a senior role to tackle illegal markets, supported by £26 million in government funding. Meanwhile, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport is considering a complete ban on unlicensed operator sponsorship in sports. Despite these efforts, the Premier League's voluntary ban on front-of-shirt gambling sponsorships, effective from the 2026/27 season, does not cover other forms of advertising, which Entain argues is insufficient.
