Gunfire erupted near the White House on the evening of May 23, leading to an immediate lockdown while President Trump was inside. An emotionally unstable suspect approached a checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, opening fire on law enforcement officers after refusing to leave. The suspect was shot by officers and later died in the hospital. A civilian was also injured in the exchange and sustained serious injuries. The U.S. Secret Service and FBI are investigating the incident.
