Ethereum developers are assessing EIP-8182, a proposal to introduce native privacy transfers for ETH and ERC-20 tokens in the upcoming Hegotá hard fork. The proposal, crafted by Facet co-founder Tom Lehman, aims to establish a canonical shielded pool system using zero-knowledge proofs, enhancing privacy by allowing users to deposit and spend tokens without revealing transaction details. This system would employ a UTXO model and a separate proof architecture, avoiding administrator-controlled upgrades or pause functions. EIP-8182, still in draft form, has not been finalized or scheduled for inclusion in any upgrade. The Hegotá hard fork, following Glamsterdam, is expected to focus on infrastructure and protocol improvements. While the proposal could significantly enhance Ethereum's privacy capabilities, developers must first evaluate its cryptographic assumptions, state growth, and potential denial-of-service risks before deciding on its inclusion.
