The Hong Kong Police Cybercrime and Technology Crime Investigation Bureau has launched the Virtual Asset Intelligence Taskforce (VAIT) to combat virtual asset-related crimes. Announced at a Web3 intelligence and law enforcement summit on October 10, 2025, VAIT will involve collaboration between law enforcement, financial regulators, and licensed virtual asset service providers. The taskforce aims to enhance the detection and prevention of crimes and cybersecurity threats in the virtual asset sector through information sharing. Police Commissioner Edwin Chau highlighted that 1,463 virtual asset-related cases were reported in the first eight months of 2025, including 15 cyberattacks on Web3 institutions, resulting in losses of approximately HKD 1.29 billion. VAIT will focus on promoting compliance, security, and market integrity within the virtual asset ecosystem through public-private partnerships. This initiative follows previous efforts by Hong Kong's Security Bureau to establish mechanisms for freezing payments in collaboration with platforms.
