MIT-educated brothers Anton and James Peraire-Bueno are facing charges of wire fraud and money laundering after allegedly executing a 12-second exploit on the Ethereum blockchain. According to testimony in a Manhattan federal court, the brothers siphoned $25 million from automated sandwich trading bots in April 2023. The exploit, known as 'Omakase,' targeted a vulnerability in Ethereum’s MEV-Boost protocol by restructuring blocks and using bait transactions to deceive the bots. The flaw was quickly addressed by Flashbots, who patched it within 24 hours of the incident. The case highlights ongoing security challenges in blockchain protocols, particularly concerning automated trading systems.
