Optimism Unveils Quantum-Resistant Roadmap for Superchain

Optimism has announced a ten-year roadmap to phase out External Ownership Accounts (EOAs) using ECDSA signatures on its Superchain and OP mainnet by January 2036. The plan involves transitioning to smart contract accounts that support post-quantum signatures, ensuring enhanced security against future quantum computing threats. This transition will occur at both user and consensus levels, utilizing account abstraction technology and standards like EIP-7702. Additionally, L2 orderers and bulk committers will adopt post-quantum signatures, while Ethereum is encouraged to develop a similar timeline for its validators. The upgrade will be implemented through coordinated hard forks, allowing a decade for adaptation.
