U.S. Jobless Claims Drop to Estimated 215,000 Amid Government Shutdown

News Flash 2025-10-17 21:26

Initial jobless claims in the United States are estimated to have fallen to approximately 215,000 for the week ending October 11, according to a Bloomberg analysis of unadjusted state-level data. This marks a decrease from the previous week's estimate of 234,000. Despite the ongoing government shutdown, which has halted the release of official weekly unemployment reports since September 25, the U.S. Department of Labor continues to provide downloadable data for most states. The analysis uses the Bureau of Labor Statistics' seasonal adjustment coefficients to estimate the figures, closely aligning with official data when complete state data is available. However, due to missing data from Arizona, Massachusetts, Nevada, and Tennessee, the average of the previous four weeks was used. Meanwhile, continuing claims slightly increased to 1.93 million for the week ending October 4, up from the previous estimate of 1.92 million.
