Claude Fable 5 Costs Double Opus But Stays Free Until June 22

Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 launched at $10 per million input tokens, double the price of Claude Opus 4.8, with free subscription access set to expire June 22.

Key Points

  • Claude Fable 5 is priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output, double Opus 4.8.
  • The model stays free on Pro, Max, and Team plans only through June 22, then moves behind usage credits.
  • It ranks as the most expensive major AI model, though Anthropic calls it less than half the cost of Mythos Preview.

Claude Fable 5 Pricing

Anthropic launched the model Tuesday, opening its first Mythos-class system to the general public after months of testing it behind closed doors. The company applied one price card to Fable 5 and its safeguard-free sibling, Claude Mythos 5, at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output. Each sits at double the rate of Claude Opus 4.8, the firm's previous flagship.

TechCrunch noted the figure also doubles the input price of rival OpenAI's GPT-5.5. Even so, Anthropic frames it as less than half the cost of its earlier Claude Mythos Preview.

Developers can reach the model on the Claude API as claude-fable-5. VentureBeat reported that Fable 5 is fully available from day one on the API and on consumption-based Enterprise plans. Anthropic expects demand to run high and hard to forecast, which shaped the slower consumer rollout.

Fable 5 stays free on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans through June 22, at no extra cost to current subscribers. From June 23, continued use will require usage credits, though the company aims to restore standard access once capacity grows.

Fable 5 Against Rivals

At list price, Fable 5 stands as the most expensive flagship any major lab sells for general use. Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro charges $2 per million input tokens, while xAI's Grok 4.1 asks just $0.20. Anthropic argues the premium buys efficiency rather than raw cheapness.

A pricing analysis found that Fable 5 cleared a frontier physics task in 36 hours, using a third of the reasoning tokens GPT-5.5 spent over four days. Stripe told the company the model compressed two months of engineering into a single day on a 50-million-line Ruby codebase.

Anthropic first opened the Mythos tier in April through Project Glasswing, limiting Claude Mythos Preview to government cyber defenders. That predecessor cost more than twice the new rate and reached only a restricted set of partners. Tuesday's debut marks the public's first path into the class.
